GMT-Master.

In 1945 Rolex presented it’s first wristwatch that displayed all 24 timezones at the same time. Unfortunately because of this it was difficult to read the time in the different time zones. It’s very likely that this particular Rolex modell attracted the attention of the airline ‘Pan American Airlines’. The management of this airline asked the watch manufacturer from Geneva to produce a special wristwatch. The management wanted a wristwatch that was suitable for two different time zones. Namely an origin- and a destination timezone. With this model it had to be possible to read the time at home and at the local destination at the same time. During a stay in hotel ‘Riz’ in Paris Hans Wildorf , co-founder of Rolex and Tudor, sketched his first ideas for this special watch. Then the sketches were immediately sent to Geneva by courier. With these sketches and instructions as a base, a common team started developing the Rolex GMT. GMT stands for ‘Greenwich Mean Time’. This timezone owes it’s name to the small village Greenwich near London. When the sun in Greenwich reaches it’s highest point in the sky, we call it 12:00. This is also called 12:00 GMT. In 1954 the first GMT-Master was presented as a concept. One year after that it was produced with reference number ’6542’. This watch had a rather special feature. The watch had an additional small hand that only circulated once in 24 hours. The related ‘24-hours rotating lunette’ served to set the second timezone. To guard the pilots from ‘Pan American Airlines’ against the reflection of light, the plastic lunette was finished with acrylic glass. However the combination of these two plastic components were not resistant to the conditions in a cockpit. Rolex decided to produce a lunette made of metal. The production of the plastic lunette stopped. Because of this the firt GMT-Masters with an original ‘acrylic glass lunette’ are very popular with collectors. The GMT-Master was waterproof to 50 meters and the magnification loop, or frog-eye, for the date was available as an additional option. The appreciation of ‘Pan American Airlines’ for the performances of the Swiss watchmanufacturer was great. So great that they chose the GMT-Master as their official time tool. The airline’s flight crew wore a Rolex GMT-Master with a black dial and the ground staff wore a GMT-Master with a white dial. The GMT-Master underwent an explosive growth and quickly became a Kult-watch.
